Somali breed The Somalis are basically longhaired Abyssinians, so the breed was named after Abyssinia's neighbouring country, Somalia. The breed was developed in the USA in the 60's. Character Somalis are intelligent, gentle, loving and companionable. They are very affectionate and they need a lot of attention from their humans. Somalis "talk" in a soft voice and they use chirps and purrs to express themselves. Somalis are energetic and playful and therefore they should have plenty of room to run and play. Somalis get along well with other cats and even with dogs. Somalis, as all other cat breeds, are happy to live indoors all their lives, given that they have enough attention and activities. Keeping a cat outdoors is very dangerous for the cat, as it faces the risk of being run over by a car, getting attacked by wild animals or dogs or other cats, or being shot or tortured by cat haters. Appearance The Somali is a moderate-sized cat, with soft, medium length fur, longer fur on the ruff, britches and a beautiful foxlike tail. Somalis are often compared to a small fox or a large squirrel. Their fur is silky and soft. There are eight recognized colors: ruddy, sorrel (red), blue and fawn and their silver dilutions. The coat develops slowly and it might take up to two years for the coat to be ready.
