Pictures of Finnish Steam Locomotives

Steam Locomotive Park in Haapamäki, Finland is one of the best
places to see old Finnish steam locomotives.  I visit this park every summer,
partly because my father happens to live in this small village. This time I took
my camera with me, and with the permission of the park manager Mr. Martti
Vainio, I publish here some pictures of these great locomotives, along with a
small story about their history.

Veturipuistontie 1, 42800 Haapamäki Finland,  Tel. +358-(0)14 733111

In this renovated Ukko-Pekka - No. 1003 - part of the engine compartment has been opened for the public to see.

Probably the most famous Finnish steam locomotive is Ukko-Pekka (below), named after Finnish president Pehr Evind Svinhufvud.  A total of 22 Ukko-Pekka locomotives were built at Lokomo factory between 1937 and 1957.  The maximum declared speed for this locomotive type was 110 km/h, but the actual speed record for Ukko-Pekka is as high as 160 km/h. The last Ukko-Pekka locomotive was withdrawn from service in 1974.

Below is a picture of another Ukko-Pekka locomotive – No. 1005 – which has not been renovated yet.

The park also features this Russian locomotive called "Swan".  It is the biggest locomotive in the park.

The interior of this Russian beast is not as shiny as the renovated exterior...

...but from the outside this Russian steamer surely is impressive (below).

Another widely used steamer was Risto (below), named after another Finnish president Risto Ryti.  Risto locomotives shared the same type of vessel and some other parts with Ukko-Pekka, but while Ukko-Pekka was mainly used in fast express trains, Risto had been designed for freight trains. One main difference was the wheel setup, which in Risto locomotive was 2-8-2 compared to Ukko-Pekka's 4-6-2 setup. The maximum speed for Risto was 80 km/h. A total of 67 Risto locomotives were built between 1940 and 1957. The last Risto locomotive was withdrawn from service in 1975.

Before Ukko-Pekka locomotives came in late 1930's, Hv2 Heikki (below) and other Hv-series locomotives served Finnish Railways in express trains.  Hv2 locomotives were built both in Lokomo factory in Finland, and in Schwartzkopff factory in Germany. A total of 33 Hv2's were built between 1919 and 1926.
