The oldest locomotive at the park is Tk2 Satikka (below), built in 1904 by Tampella. Besides being the oldest, it is also special due to its engine construction. Tk2 locomotives are so called "wet steam" engines, which means that the boiler doesn't include a superheater. Also, they are so called compound engines, which means that fresh steam from the boiler is not channelled to both cylinders, but instead the exhaust steam from the first cylinder is channelled to the second one. This low pressure cylinder is bigger by size than the high pressure cylinder on the other side of the engine (picture on left). Due to this construction, Tk2's were very clumsy and slow, maximum speed 45 km/h. A total of 34 Tk2 locomotives were built between 1903 and 1907. They were first used in freight trains, but from 1930's onwards they were mainly moved to serve in switch yards. The last Tk2 was withdrawn from service in 1960. |

| Pr2 Henschel's were originally ordered in 1939 by Estonian Railways (below and on the right). But when they were ready to be shipped, Estonia no longer existed as an independent country, neither existed Estonian Railways. As it was war time, there was shortage of locomotives in Finland, so Finnish Railways took the opportunite to buy these brand new locomotives. They arrived in Finland in 1942. The technical construction of this locomotive was not very successful, and Pr2 is the only locomotive in Finnish Railways which has encountered a boiler explosion en route. |
![]() Vr2 Ankka locomotives (below) were heavy switch locomotives. A total of 16 Vr2's were built during 1930 and 1931. The last Ankka locomotive was in duty until 1975, which formally ended the era of steam locomotives in Finland. Five Vr2's have been preserved, and one of them is at display at Haapamäki station (No. 953, picture below). This locomotive even has some personal meaning to me, as my father has painted it to its current shiny form. |
