Hertfordshire
There were people named Meade or Mede in Hertfordshire going back to about 1300, if not before. The surname originated in several places around that time, mainly in eastern and northern Herts. My earliest known ancestor was Richard Mede, who was married in Watford in 1545 and left a will dated 1559. There was a Margaret Meade, widow, who rented some property in Watford in 1544, who was probably his mother. There was also a Robert Meidde, who was mentioned in a will in Watford in 1503, but I don't have enough evidence to connect him to Richard. Richard Mede's descendants lived in Watford until the 1640s. I have researched some other Mead families elsewhere in Hertfordshire, but it is unlikely that they are related to the Meads in Watford.
