Mein Sauerkraut! |

My first batch of Sauerkraut is ready! I let it stand for three weeks in room temperature and it seems to be ok because there is no mold or any funny smells (apart from the obvious). Now I let it cool down a little and I think I have it a go just a bit later. Hmmm, could try to fry it on a pan with a bit of cream.

Faux Caviar Blinis |

Blinis with faux caviar made from tapioca starch and saesoned with soy sauce and balsamic winegar.
Molecular Books |

Herve This books arrived today! Later in the evening I made some bok choy (white chinese cabbage) and tofu in coconut milk with red rice. I also tried the faux caviar I started to prepare yesterday. It had been in the marinade over night in the fridge and had taken some color from the balsamic winegar and soy sauce. I could have boiled the tapioca pearls bit longer so they would be completely translucent but the consistency and taste were quite allright. With onion and smetana on the crepe I had saved earlier the results were convincing. I'm now ready to make real blinis to go with the faux caviar! I added some algae in the caviar pot to give it a little more of that "sea" flavor.

Souffle! |

We had a guest and I decided to make a cheese souffle with winter salad of fennel and grapefruit. The souffles were just amazing. I used Swiss gruyere cheese in the souffle and it made good pair with the salad. The recipe was again from the "Egg" book. Desert was Pear and rosemary sous vide and whipped whisky cream. I made the pear in 80 degrees, but I would change that to about 83 if I ever do this again. The pear was still a bit hard but there was nothing wrong with the taste!

DIY Sous Vide System |

I'm logically moving from Egg-book to 65-degree egg and sous vide technique... How fascinating is this! Thermal control unit from Ebay 33 EUR with shipping from Hong Kong and an immersion heater and cord from local Clas Ohlsson shop for about 20 EUR. First thing I made was the eggs but the next was a bit more elaborate dish. Salmon sous vide with roasted cauliflower pure and a sauce with lemon and capers. I set the system to 50 degrees celsius and wrapped the salmon in plastic with just little olive oil, salt and pepper. The hardest part was to keep the two salmon packets under water and I have to make something up before next time. I think some sort of cage would work well so the water could flow freely and the same time the food would keep a safe distance from the heating element.
I also ordered 3 books about molecular gastronomy from Amazon. I'll write when they arrive. I think I got this whole idea from a book "Kemiaa Keittiössä" (Anu Hopia). I cooked the salmon for about 30 minutes in the 50 degree water and I think it was quite perfect. It was throughly cooked and still velvety soft and very light. It broke to pieces easily and the meat came off the skin very easy. Very fishy! The serving doesn't do it justice in the picture but I wanted to taste it as soon asap and couldn't waste any time. Next time I will fry the fish on a hot pan for a couple of seconds for a nicer look and more "grilled" taste, but even this first try was a revelation in this kind of special cooking.

Poached Eggs on Celeriac |

New year starting a bit late? Recipe for the egg dish was from Michel Roux's book "Egg".

XL Burgers And Carrot Cake |

Today was a day off so I just watched Top Chef Masters and then decided to make something myself. "Everything was good."

Summer Is Over |

Summer's gone but Autumn is here with Mudcakes and stuff. In the other picture is a meal on my girlfriend's summer cottage. I got the pike on my firs throw of a minnow from the pier. We also had potatoes, halloumi cheese and mushroom sauce. I will try to go to work by bike as long as I can - I'll bike through the winter if possible. I need a new bike though as fenders don't fit in it and they are a must on those rainy days if I wan't to get in decent condition to work. I'm waiting an offer from a bicycle shop... And why I can't open this simple text based web page as TEXT in my MacBook's text editor? Don't need to see the web page but the text! Why is it so hard!

Los Fotos |

Quite a break, eh... I'v been busy and I bought a new camera! Here are some recent food shots. Growing beans can be fun. For the veggie lasagne I made Bechamel sauce for the first time in my life and it was awesome! It takes time to cook but it's worth every minute! That tomato & bean pizza was ok, but let's just say that it was the last tme I will leave the cheese under the other fillings... Could be good on top AND bottom of course!
Spice |

I just finished building a shelf for all my spices so they don't always just lie around on the table. It turned out ok even it was somewhat dusty here and I had to paint it on the floor. The glossy white is actually a pain to finish nicely, but it was the only paint I had at the moment for this purpose. Looks home made at least!
Salads |

I'v been making salads nearly every day for a few weeks now. They're healthy and I like them too. Best served with fresh baked bread.
Beanbag |

I made a big gray beanbag to the studio so we can shoot babies! Ok I admit it's a Fatboy copy but I made it from rough cotton instead of nylon so it's not that slippery and light reflecting as the original.

Back Online |

Hello! I'm back online again after an exhausting autumn. Let's see how the winter goes by. I have to do something to this simple DIY blog of mine as it's quite annoying to add pictures and there is no archieve... I might have to take out some old stuff or figure out something else. Oh, and if I didn't thank you already for participating this year's MFFF I'll do it now. THANK YOU! I hope we'll meet again next year.

High-End Preamp |

This is a High-End Preamp project I started a while ago - well it's almost ready now. The project was published in Elektor Electronics magazine in 2004 and I got the 2 articles from their website (www.elektor.com) If you register you get credits to download one article from the archieve and you can buy more credits from there if you need. Now the preamp seems to work fine, but I had some difficulties with the microprocessor programming and I already prepared for the worst. I decided to purchase a simple programming device from Ebay and that did the trick after trying few programs. This was the very first time for me and it was fun to realize that I could program the microcontrollers myself in the future. The device cost only $20 including shipping from Canada so it really was a bargain! I also went to check a second hand turntable. I should get that on Saturday and I just can't wait to get it running so I can listen my favorite records with it. I hope I can hear a difference and I hope it's good...

I made a testshot of pineapples with my new Carl Zeiss ZM 50mm f1.5 Sonnar.

Turn The Table |

This year's first DIY project is a turntable power supply for my Rega Planar 3. Quite sophisticated design with sinus generator,DAC and power amplifier that drives the TT motor. Speed can be switched from 33.3 to 45 in a flick of a switch and even fine tuned.

Darkroom |

Darkroom works fine! The darkroom-in-a-closet has just enough space to turn around on a chair - and that is enough! I Made a couple of test prints at night and I'm planning to do more tonight.
Sunday At Work |

This Sunday I'm here at work as we're open for some reson. It's very quiet so I have time do my own 'undone' works. Sent some emails and scanned some pictures... I might even do some black and white photos when I get back home - Have to test that new darkroom ASAP! Yesterday I bought a black cloth that I can put in there to keep the light from getting in as the door isn't tight enough. The weather is beautiful and the sun is shining outside - it's awfully hot inside. 1h 30 minutes to go.
Back Again! |

Summer is here and I now have a chance to loosen my work pace a little. I still have to show some stuff for my teatcher at school next week, but basicly I'm done with it. I will graduate probably sometime in August or so. At home I just finished building my own darkroom in a closet! Don't have to worry so much about the ultraviolet if I'm going to spend hours in there. I might do some test drafts today or tomorrow. These pictures are just scans from negs I shot before. Some light gets in the camera somewhere it shouldn't. I hope I get to write more often again.

Borch |

On the menu today: borch and sandwiches. I still have a few liters of borch at home... Probably the best soup you can make from cabbage.
Bamboo Center |

Eating out... This time in the Bamboo center. Food was delicious and reasonably priced.7,20 euros (including coffee or tea) as we were there at the lunch hour. There are at least two different lunch pricings: before 15.00 or so its even cheaper, I think it was 6,20e and after 15.00 it's 7,20e, but I can't remember to what - maybe it was 15.00-17.00 or -18.00? I ordered a hot Malesian vegetable dish and my friend had a milder fried vegetables with tofu. I can say my dish was really hot! But not too much - I could still taste the different legumes and I did not even cry! It's good to have some variation to those lame vegetable dishes you get every so often. The place had very efficient and welcoming service. The waitress was whirling all over the place and kept every waterglass filled and new customers were shown to their tables. ***** Extra bonus for vast selection of vegetable dishes and clear markings on the menu. I also had to take a picture of Lasipalatsi. I bought a Chinese (!why not Japanese?) Fuji apple and a 250g pack of espresso coffee. Don't have a pan though... I'm looking.
Sandwich |

Mmmmm foood. Beans, sandwiches and noodles at work.

Warm Day At The Blueberry Island |

Pictures from the outdoor trip to Mustikkasaari. Beautyful warm and sunny day - just perfect for taking pictures and enjoying a walk by the frozen sea in good company. After that we went to a small Indian "take away rastaurant" to eat. Food was good and very filling. A little minus for the outlook, because we had different dishes, but they looked exactly the same! Just a minor changes in ingredients. Price was right though and it was good, so why not... I'll have to go there again to check a one dish more and see if it's any different.
Octa Choclate Cake Gore |

In the evening I want to Lasipalatsi's Cafejava for a tea and a delicious Sacher cake with my friend. The cake tasted fresh and something like octa choclate paste between fluffy triple choclate covered with double choclate! Hey, it was 5,50 euros but probably worth it... just count the calories. Gooooood. After that we went to the cinema to see a Film by Lucio Fulci - Don't Torture A ducling. It was a "horror" film - I liked it, even though it wasn't that scary. The end was particularly hilarious and I just couldn't help laughing. Some nice gore at the screen... A good way to spend an evening after a day off from work.
Saturday trip to "Sello" |

Spent a moment in Leppävaara, Espoo. The new Sello shopping center is really colossal and airy, not like some older ones like Itäkeskus, which I think is an incarnation of hell on earth. I try to avoid it till the end because of the cramped spaces and masses of randomly moving people over there. This one is like a huge hall with glass roof and open mid section - say bye bye to claustrophobia. Wide "streets" and you can see the shops from the center to find your way where you want to go. No long corridors and hallways and tunnels. Quite hectic but not too much.

From the roof I could see my old school! Evtek.

Instant Life |

Tomatosoup and a "pizza" - yummy.

Mediterranian Homesick Alien |

Busy... Let the pictures tell the story. Oh, I have to say that was a really nice small pizzeria (Välimeri) and fresh ingredients. I managed to negotiate a cauliflower soup with a piece of bread for one (1) euro as an antipasto... It was on Helsinginkatu, can't remember the street number - a couple of blocks from the metro. One person in the table had a falafel. Looks good but I didn't taste.
Time Warp With a Hoodie |

Last night I finished making my new camo hoodie. It has a zip pocket on the other side that's perfect for my MP3-player.

I have to save some money because KELA wants something back... 1980.57 euros. Oh well. I also need some to put out the Osasto 11 -record. I thought I'd save something by making simple food at work. I took yesterdays left overs to work and though it may look horrific it's very good! And healthy, actually. Potatoes with brown sauce and soy chunks. I also bought a chinese sweet mandarin, wich was packed in plastic wrapping - someone has obviously lost his mind. Why pack these???

Andrei Rubljov |

Sunday in the movies: Andrej Rubljov by Andreij Tarkovskij. I prepared for the worst 3 hour sitting experience ever in a theater, but the movie turned out to be interesting and very beautiful film. Never thought making a church bell could be so touching experiece...
Omelette á la Chili |

Remember the cheap mild spanish chilies? Well I made a chili cheese omelette and some "chinky"-flavour noodles whatever that taste is anyway? Tasted good though - these are my favourite noodles right now... Did I write it the right way? Was it "Kinky" after all?
Blood Chinois |

The day after we decided to go to the chines restaurant for lunch. It's just across the street so I can see it from my window. The moment I got in I realized it must have the same owner as the last one! (This was my first time here.) Even the napkins were the same - it seemed that only the restaurant's name was different. It was the lunch hour, so the price for Tofu With vegetables was very reasonable 6,60e (including salad and coffee). We got the salads quickly and the main dishes too. The salad had fres pineapple in it and I decided to order one Spring Roll (2,80e) as well and it came soon with a cup of delicious sweet sauce. It was very crisp and had a mild cabbage and vegetable filling. All the rest I said from the other place fits this place too, so you can read it from the bottom of this page. (Although the prices can vary a bit as I didn't read the menu at all this time.) I will definately eat here sometime soon! I live so close and it's nice to have something else than pizza every time...

Happy Birthday Me |

I'm too old now to tell the details, but it was my birthday all right... Cake and friends at my place etc. Fun! Presents! Drinks! A tomato double cheese pizza at the Merirosvo Pub. It was so delicious I nearly forgot to take the picture! I'd say this is the best pizza place in Kallio. And probably in the whole Helsinki in this price range... The Bullman in Fleminginkatu is an excellent place too, but a bit more expensive. There you have to choose the right fillings to get it right!
Gig At The Factory |
Pictures are coming later, but there was a couple of my friends' bands playing in Factory. Urban Unrest was the first and Osasto 11 the seciond band playing. Sold a couple of Osasto 11 T-shirts there. Thanks everyone!

Pizza Tuning with Ski-Bun |

Back to basics... Bought two vegetarian pizzas, made by Saarioinen, of course! Lack of inspiration? NO. I tuned the pizzas with extra cheese, fresh tomatoes and rucola - didn't even recognise the original pizza from below. Then I bought two special buns, filled with marzipan almond paste and whipped cream. Need to say more? Heavenly! Offered the second bun to my workmate.
Falafel Ball Bearing |

I used the rest of the falafel pack we used earlier... taste was as good as ever, of course. This time it was with rice, not potatoes. I also made a sauce and then assembled a sort of ball bearing from the falafels. Tastes better than molybden oiled vanadium steel bearings!
Chili Garlic Potatos And Cheese |

This was my lunch at work. Found a 400g box of garlic Potatoes and a mild Spanish chili (that costed 5 cents!) Then I mixed everything, put some cheese on top and threw the whole thing to microwave. Tasted excellent and hot! I also had warm bread from the bakery downstairs - That's my favourite bread with seeds on top.
Thin Bread |

I made some fast thin bread with potatosoup.

Punk 30 Years Party |

Huh - What A weekend! I met tons of people in the Punk 30 Years -party on Saturday; Sorry, but now I'm just too tired to write anything. Today I bought some warm Carelian Pies (Karjalanpiirakoita), tasted very good but what is it with the packaging??? Has someone lost his/her mind? Like it wouldn't be already overpacked in a cardboard box, but there is actually a spacer that only takes space inside the box, so it is actually makes the box about 30% bigger than necessary! The pies are baked in the shop, so why won't they sell them over the counter like they do in bakeries usually? Why bother even packing them in those totally useless boxes anyway? There is 8 pies in one oversized box; they would fit fine in a paperbag! Argh! I'm too busy to write to Fazer about this, but some day... Then I took the film "cans" from my work and opened them - took the plastic spool out and then I'll take the metal to recycling. Actually I will do it right now. Bye.

Osasto 11 DIY T-Shirts |

After work I watched the Idols 2007 on tv yesterday, sitting on the Fatboy and eatin nachos (again). Then I started to make the craftworks and cut out the stencil to print some Osasto 11 T-shirts. Osasto 11 is my friends' band and I'm about to publish their first 7" EP soon. I just hope it gets somewhere. So in the meantime I thought it would be fun to print shirts and stuff like that. Like I didn't have anything else in my'schedule... The T-shirt turned out fine and now they are waiting for the second phase - the red colour. I thought I'd just splash it around bit. We'll see the results tomorrow. (Picture updated) Order yours now! I'm making a new batch soon, as these found their new owners immediately! Contact mfffestival_AT_gmail.com - the shirts are highest quality (Super Premium) black Fruit Of The loom T-shirts. All silk screened by me and every shirt has a bit different red "decoration". Price is 10 euros ask for shipping and availability.

Buenos Nachos |

Hmmm. The exposure to "doubles" continues; today I made the same kind of veggie burgers as yesterday. In the picture there are some nachos from yesterday evening. I used red kidneybeans, tomatocrush, chili, diced onion and the same carrot pulp what I got from the juicer earlier. very easy to do: just soak (24h) and boil the beans and add everything else and then just crush the whole thing, so that the beans turn into a paste. Add salt, pepper and what ever spices you want. I also had some cheese sauce on the nachos (both ready from the shop). I would need some sleep now that I have eaten all this... But no - I just have to work.

Good Morning |

Yesterday when I got back home from work there was a note from the post office - a packet has arrived. I knew it was either a couple of LPs or then a bit larger packet from Germany. When I got to the post office, the first thing I saw was this huge packet with big letters saying "Fatboy". Easy to spot... size 60 x 60 x 110 cm. I thought I'd take a tram home, even though it's not a long journey, just a couple of blocks or a one tram stop. I saw people waiting for the tram so I decided to wait and try fitting the box in - I wasn't even sure it would fit through the doors. I managed to poke it in somehow (It was a tight fit and even harder to get out.) and a couple of minutes later I was at home opening the cardboard box. It was huge and red Fatboy! Now I have to find a new place for my old chair. I hope it isn't jealous.

I also baked some bread at night. I had made some carrot juice in a juicer earlier and had saved and freezed the pulp - it's great material for carrot bread. I couldn't decide if these turned out to be small breads or large rolls. Is it a fusion or confusion?

Here are the tuned carrot breads. I put some Pirkka vegetarian patties, cheese slices, rucola salad, tomato, mustard, ketchup and mayo in and it turned out to be great! And after the dinner my Runeberg's tart count is 3.
...Oops, I did it again |

So, it was the spinach soup this time round. Taste was ok, but nothing special - I'd say home made soup has much more distinctive spinach flavor. In addition I bought two boxes of Pirkka light beetroot salad (2 boxes for 2 euros, 400g per box). I'd say this is the best version of it. The taste is fresh and full without the heavy mayo. As I already bought the soup yesterday, I bought a box of 2 Runeberg's Tarts! By the way - is there a reason why everything is packed in double??? Anyway, it was abgain made by Fazer and yes, it was moist and wonderful. Oh, and I made the tea yesterday night and that was good! And when I woke up and went to work I tasted the coffee - that I didn't like as much. It tasted a little bitter in my opinion. I will try that later on again at home. Maybe it's just the working environment...
Busy At Work |

Today there was a special offer for frozen soups; 2 packs for 2 euros. Cheap! I bought a spinach and a vegetable puré soup (400g each). For one euro I got a very delicious vegetable soup indeed. The soup was not vegan as it had a little bit of cheese and milk mixed in with the carrots and cauliflower. Tomorrow I will consume the spinach soup, so wait a moment... I'll guess it's good too. I also bought a freshly baked (warm!) bread from the bakery downstairs. Warm bread is one of the soft spots I have. Thick bread slices with cheese, tomato and cucumber. And the grande finale; breadcheese (a type of traditional Finnish cheese) with cloudberry jam. Hadn't eaten this desert for years and I had almost forgotten how good it was! I warmed the breadcheese in the microwave owen for 30 seconds (not very high-end solution, but hey, I'm at work!) and bling! - it's ready. Looks a bit frightening in the picture, but tastes unbelievably smooth; a mild mixture of salty and sweet.

On the way back home I visited a new Ekolo-shop near my house. It is specialized in bio-organic and ecological products. I had the last of my Simon Lévelt tea last night, so I decided to buy some. This time I bought organic coffee of the same manufacturer; Dolce -mild blend of arabica beans (4,50€/250g) and Yogi Bhajan's Ayurvedic Bedtime Tea (4,50€/30g), a herb and spice blend. Actually it's a tea type drink but there isn't any tea leaves in it. The main ingredients are fennel seeds, chamomille and peppermint and other spices. As I opened the packet there was a very strong scent that I could sniff for hours - can't wait for the bedtime! A report will follow...

Sunday |

The first plan was to go to Suomenlinna and and make a visit to an art exhibition, but we missed the boat and then it was already too late. The usual story, ha-ha. Beautyful weather and some frosting on my windows. My friend's turn to make food. Lebanese falafel with small potato balls. There was a quite humorous accident; the chili powder vapourized on the stove and filled my whole flat with mace - Funny indeed! We both were coughing and eyes wet for a while and I had to open the balcony door and windows to get rid of the chili gas. Food itself tasted was excellent! Falafels were made from a packet, manufactured by Joseph Machaalany & Sons. Yummy!

Wäiski The Rockin' Boat |

Saturday night and feeling a bit tired and cold. Had a few beers at home and then I headed to Wäiski, a boat laying near by at the dock - serving as a restaurant and bar, and now as a rock venue. I was told to be one of the last to get in, the place was already full. I met amazing bunch of my friends there, some totally unexpected. Excellent! It was The Patsy Walkers & Anal Thunder 14-year birthday party (4 + 10). They didn't play, but The Heartburns and Cold Call did. And there was also Fabulous Cyclones, but I missed them as I came in a bit late. I was told it actually was The Flaming Sideburns undercover...
Very nice night alltogether. Music and people, what else do you need?
Winter |

I had a day off from work and I thought to walk around a bit. The sun was already going down in the afternoon when I got out and the blue moment was just about to come. Crisp freeze, but not too much, maybe -10 or so.
Pancakes! |

Looked inside the fridge, and the first thing I saw were the ingredients to pancakes; milk, eggs and then there were enough wheat flour in the cupboard. Only the jam was missing, but not for long - there's a shop (very untidy Siwa) near by.
Micragirls No, Sirdie Yes |

Missed the Micragirls gig - arrrrgh! I did not realize the place (Liberté) would be full packed so early. Damn. Solution to such a problem was found near by: Pub Sirdie. Recommendation: beer. I think there was only Lapin Kulta on tap? It's nothing like the top fermented trappist beer from Belgium that I had yesterday, though. That was Chimay Blue, yesterday and in the Pub Toveri...

Tampere Weekend Sunday |

Day 2 in Tampere: feeling well in a snowstorm! Osasto 11, me, and a few friends went to eat to the Gastropub Soho. Looking like a proper English pub with dark wood furniture and selection of ales on tap. Most of us ordered a recommended vegetarian burger and they arrived quite swiftly but in two sets, because there were 9 of us and the "kitchen" only so small... But what a burger it was! Loaded with 2 large veg patties, 2 THICK slices of blue cheese, salad and proper fries on the side and vinegar, ketchup and mustard brought to table. Nice service too. Very recommended place if you happen to visit in Tampere. Veg Burger was 8,90 (other burgers 8,90 - 12,50, toasts 3,20 etc.)

Tampere Weekend Saturday |

This weekend I went to Tampere to see a couple of bands and friends in a place called Vastavirta (or VV for short). The place was very neat place to gig and it was a lot cleaner than I thought. Bookshelf on on wall and cosy sofas on the opposite side of the stage. The bar was in the middle and then some tables. Sound was good and the size of the stage was right for small and midsize bands. I'd say this was one of the best places of this size I've ever been to - not too small, not too large and good in many ways. I didn't even think it was too far from the city, although it would take a while to get there by foot. The bands were Sörsselssöns, Osasto 11, Veljekset Perse and Ristisaatto. Thanks everyone for accomodation and good company!
Snowy Runeberg's Tart |

Snow! Today I also bought a Runeberg's tart (Runebergin torttu in Finnish). Nothing strange in that except that is was the best little piece of any tart I've ever tasted! This year at least. 1,50 from Citymarket's Fazer-bakery, Vuosaari. Almost went back there to buy a box full of these. This one lasted about 21 seconds and I had to fight myself to take a picture before it was all gone. Actually there was only the top of the tart left when I took my camera... The tart was tasty and moist and I could see and taste the almond crush... It has also snowed today and the weather is getting colder now - maybe even freezing as I write.

More Pizza! Norovirus! |

Not feeling very good today either. I think I had a virus or something - a Norovirus I presume... It has been around I heard. Causes vomiting and nausea; never had a hangover this bad. I was drinking yesterday but not so much to deserve a state like this! I don't usually feel bad, now I did and I threw up a couple of times - it just doesn't happen to me normally. Norovirus gets my vote!
Despite the feeling I wanted to eat something. It was a mistake I admit, but I wanted to do it. Close by there's a pizzeria Sivuraide, which has a legend status already. Haven't been there for a while, so I decided to try something of which I heard some rumours a couple of weeks ago: A soy bolognese pizza. A vegetarian variant of the classic meat version. Can't really comment on the taste because I wasn't feeling too good to start with, but I can sure tell you all this was the largest specimen I have never seen! Just check the picture! You might see the shape of the plate somewhere across the pizza, but really. The table was barely large enough! Size: XXXL, price: cheap (2 pizzas, beer and water = 11,90€), Taste: ok, music: strange (ranging from the Sound Of Music to something totally different...), other customers: strange, atmosphere: strange. One elderly "lady" was repeating over and over: "I love this food! This is magnificent! I love it!" Maybe you can take her word for it? She ate pasta of some sort I thought. And she made clear that she had coffee and cognac for desert. I vomited a couple of hours later - this wasn't the pizza's fault I can tell, so don't be afraid of the place.

Pizza |

Ok. I wasn't feeling very strong today. My friends were playing in Factory bar and I had a few beers. The next day I needed something to make it all better - a pizza! With 2 fillings the pizza was 5€ in a place called "Paras Pizza" just one block down from my apartment. Taste: ok, size: medium, price: ok. Everything ok. And the band yesterday night: Sideshow Zombies.

CD Colour Organizer |

I was looking for something like this to fill my walls with. Wooden CD holders from IKEA 3,95€. Each block takes 21 CDs. Not perfect but works for now... I'm planning to build something better myself. Something that will hold more CDs and doesn't need so many screws to attach to the wall. I'd hate to drill the wall full of little holes. I have had my CDs in colour order for years now - looks fabulous on the shelves - and now on the wall! I want to cover the whole wall with these but it's a shame the CDs' and LPs' backs are mostly black or white. Maybe I should write to the record companies and ask them to make more colourful records in the future?

Some Curry And Fairtrade Tea

Started my day late and noticed some YLE film crew vans outside my building. Nothing special, they film a series called Kotikatu in the neighbourhood every week. I don't watch it myself but it is quite popular TV show in Finland. Couldn't see any actors, just the vans - the weather was lousy, rainy and windy and grey. They probably went to a brake... Who cares.
Then we watched some Iggy Pop videos with my friends. Actually I was cooking and baking bread so I mostly listened, which was ok, since they had used a lot of old still pictures. I heard the document allright and it was nice to hear about someone's not so regular past. Hmmmm, interesting!
After the doc and some live footage we ate some Dal Bhat (sort of lentil soup with rice) and potato curry. I also baked carrot bread but it wasn't ready just then. I have to use the carrot pulp I got making carrot juice mith my new juicer (thanks mom). I already had the lentil soup ready - made that yesterday night. lentils are easy and if you have plenty of time to cook the Dal (lentils) it will only taste better. This time I was a bit open handed with the chili measure, so both dishes were a bit hotter than usual, but in a good way of course!

Dal Bhat is the daily diet for majority of the population in Nepal. By the way you can get that recipe from www.food-nepal.com. That place is packed with good recipes - You can also find the Vegetarian Momo recipe from there.
Afterwards we got a free ride to IKEA and back. IKEA has somekind of promotion going on and there are free buses going to both shops from Helsinki. I found a cure to my CD keeping - you can read more about it tomorrow I guess. I also found a nice big glass "bubble" lamp. I saw one in my friend's parents' newly decorated flat and immediately wanted one too.

Can you see that odd fellow checking out that new lightball and some Simon Lévelt Fairtrade™ English Blend black tea (certified organic growth)? "Rich, dark and somewhat sweet tea from Tanzania." I'll agree to that. It wasn't as acidic as some of the basic everyday teas I use. Liked this very much in fact. Usually these organic teas are at least double the price of a regular, but surpricingly this wasn't - at least not noticeably. About 1,90€ for 20 tea bags. And now I can sleep with a clear conscious too!
This little bugger is dead! (It's the actual specimen!) When I lighted that new lamp of mine, the shadows were cast strangely over my head. I checked it out and it was a fly. Nothing special in that except it was dead, and still hanging upside down from my ceiling! It wasn't crushed or anything - a natural death cause. The fly was buried in to my dustbin, no ceremonies.

Today I went to a Chinese Restaurant called Dragon Spring, it was on Urho Kekkosen katu, just by the Kamppi mall. My good friend Jussi and I wondered for a while looking for the "right" place to eat that would go with our budget. Actually there wasn't any particular price range, but we just felt it had to be the cheapest - Quite a start for my food diary! And we had the same dishes, so no surprices here...
Well the price was right to the point. 7€ for three (3) small vegetarian dishes! +1,50€ for the desert; a deep fried pineapple (or banana) with vanilla ice cream and caramelle sauce. As drinks, a water pitcher was additional 50c and the world famous Tsingtao beer 3,90€ for a 0,33l bottle (goes excellently with the food). The main dishes were priced up from about 6€, the small soups were extremely cheap, about 2,20€, but we didn't try them - looked nice on the table across though. Nice for starters and they won't brake your bank! The service was good, even though we had to go with the flow and wittness the rush hour in the restaurant. As we got in there were only a couple seats taken, but while we placed our orders the restaurant was packed with people. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The place was neat and cosy, with no hint of too complicated thoughts behind the food. Easy to come in.
The size of the dishes was also right and we didn't even need more rice to our table (the waitress checked our situation a couple of times so we would have gotten more if we'd needed. Even though the waitresses were very busy.)
The three dishes were all nicely different from each other: Chinese mixed vegetable with tofu; the usual vegetarian mild kind you get, Peking mixed vegetable (a little different from the other) and a nice looking vegetarian spring roll with a sweet red sauce.

My friend said he wasn't wery hungry when we got in, but I sure was. Not as hungry as I could, but still. For any meter - the food was very good. Spring roll was crispy and sweet, and the other dishes were still above average - even though priced a bit lower! The mixed vegetables were mild tasting but very good. Those who have used to a bit spicyer dishes may find the additional chilli practical (found on the table). The desert was made from a regular canned pineapple, but for the price you really can't complain! The ice cream was as good as any.
I will definately visit this restaurant again and recommend it to everyone! Low prices and tasty dishes, and nice service despite the rush hour. (The rush started about 17.45, but still we stayed at the restaurant for only about 1h.)
Five stars for price ***** Excellent!

New for 2007

Sun is coming out at last! Ops, now it's gone again. Yesterday I tried to remember how to make web pages, but obviously it has been a while since last time. I wanted to make a picture diary of some sort so let's see what happens... I should be able to finish the photo albums and other stuff sometime later, even though I have about million things I should do. MFFF2007 -DVD and Nuclear Umbrella recordings and there's also some school works to be done. Listening to Radiohelsinki makes working easier - I like the variation a lot. Not some stupid playlists going on and on with the same music all the time. I have to work for hours listening so I appreciate it.

I should also sell this beauty - Hasselblad 500C with Distagon wide angle and a Sonnar tele. Ageless quality from 1958.

Recently in Twin Peaks...

The re-run of Twin Peaks is on TV once again. Very recommended for everyone! I had my share not so long ago - I watched both seasons in a row in about four days. The series to really make my day (Northern Exposure gets only close to this, I think.) Easygoing, deep and mysterious -calm. Agent Cooper. What else is there? Recommended: Coffee & doughnuts, meditation. You might concider buying also a dictaphone.

The food of today: Momos with chilli, potato salad and noodles, cake and Lo-Han-Kuo -beverage... Slightly over packed but good - It says in the packet that if used regularly it's good for your lungs and spleen. The packet is really annoying; first you take the box out of the plastic and inside the cardboard box there are more little packs inside a plastic wrapping, after which you'll find yet another plastic wrapping over a paper foil... and there they are! Two little cubes looking like brown sugar.

The New Metro Station

The new metro station was officially opened today. I cheked it out in the evening. Looking sharp, modern and minimalistic. Nice colours. Some people complained about the lack of escalators - there are only lifts and stairs and the lifts aren't too large, and of course they are slow too. For those not in a good shape, like elderly people, it could be a pain in the ass. Since they are planning a huge amount of new flats to the area (kalasatama - or Fiskhamnen på svenska), they should perhaps have considered the amount of older people living there in the near future. |
