Roykka hospital area
Roykka hospital/sanitarium seen from south in 2002. Main door is located at left. Access to "tower" via wooden pavilion can be seen on the right side of image.

History: Roykka (Röykkä as rightly spelled in Finnish) was established in 1903. During that time it was called as Nummela Sanatorium. The main building was planned only for rich and Swedish patients. Wooden pavilion holding thirty beds was build for common people after government decision. Nummela Sanatorium offered heathcare for the tuberculosis. Healtcare for the annual 150-200 patients included (amount of other things) airbaths which were effective because over 72 percent of patients where reported to be cured. In 1958 sanitarium was sold to Helsinki City and its name was changed to Roykka Hospital. Hospital offered psychiatric help for the elderly people. It was closed in 1997 probably because of economical reasons.

Location: Near city (could be village) of Röykkä. Drive Helsinki-Hämeenlinna highway to north and turn to road 132 before Klaukkala junction. Drive as long as you get in Röykkä and go over railway bridge and look for small "Röykän sairaala" black sign to right (I think it was second junction after railway). You will see wooden Villa after 100-200m of driving.

Preliminary intelligence preview: Site located when operator was reading local newspaper. An article was regarding the Roykka hospital area and the City Council´s decision to leave new usage plans of area on table. Article had a small side note that hospital was abandoned in 1997. Quick search of newspaper archives revealed following facts; hospital was located in a remote area, has kilometer long sand beach and size of 10 000 square meters including Jugend style main building. It has not been used from year 1997. Nurmijärvi city has tried to sell area without success so far.

Preliminary actions: Nothing big

Expedition log and images: First trek was made in evening of 16th of April 2002. Place was easy to find. We bypassed two access forbidden signs but no fence or other driving obstacles.
