Abandoned limestone mine of Sotunki
As a part of the FUE you could meet all creatures great and small. This pictures is from the nearby farm and as you can see, cows are carefully gathering after summoned by the member Willow, our "expert" of cow handling.

History: Unclear at this moment. Could be from the 1900 century.

Location: Get first to Kehä (ring) III, go to eastward, turn to Hakunilantie, keep driving until you can turn to right to Sotungintie, wait for a crossroad, turn on Nybyggetintie, keep driving to north to Kalkkiuunintie and hit the brake when you see crossing to Uunimäentie. The mine is now about 50m to west from the road, on a hill, end of the narrow path (see if you can locate small wooden stairs).

Preliminary intelligence preview: Member of the FUE saw a small notebook about mines in Helsinki area when he was visiting Tikkurila library. Off course that notebook was not for loan and he was forced to make hastily copies from the map.

Preliminary actions: Talking, talking. Should go there....

Expedition log and images: 20th of June 2002. Finally located. Little bit disappointment. This is more a pit than a mine. Two small ruins, pile of stones, probably ovens. Very quiet and peaceful place in the old woods. There is traces of limestone on the walls all around the place. No mark of any machinery found, the place could be too old for it. I wonder how much water could have been gathering in to the pit. My guess is around one to two meters. I should make some kind of measurement rope for these kind of purposes. -Willow

Back to main

This is it. The pit is about 25m long and 5m wide. Filled with water. Limestone was dig/hacked from here and somehow transfer to the near oven (not sure about the term, but it is a place were limestone ore is burned before use). It is little bit complicated to imagine how the limestone was lifted from the pit. There is no ramp from the pit.
The limestone oven. Located near of the pit. There was an smaller oven next of this one. Someone called "iceman" was here, humor or lack of intelligence to put text like this to the oven?
Little bit right from above picture. There were some short iron bars between the rocks.
