<games | <<portfolio | <<<main The following are both homemade versions of existing games and commissioned works. I have been doing my own versions of board games whose themes and/or design I'm not very impressed with. I do feel very happy when playing with unique components of my own design. For me, a big part of enjoying games are the visual and tactile sensations. For instance, a simple addition of real coins, instead of plastic or cardboard ones, has a big impact on my enjoyment. I'm just funny that way. Most of the graphics are hand drawn, scanned and vectorised. Some digital photos are thrown in in some of the designs. The main design is done in Illustrator, InDesign and/or Photoshop. The cards are then laser printed, cut and put in clear card protectors backed with old Magic: The Gathering cards. Boards are backed on cardboard or foamcore panels. The coins have accumulated on my travels during the years, and most probably aren't even valid anymore. But they still do look and feel nice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: a game of epic interstellar conflict. game designed by touko tahkokallio, development and graphic design by me. a work in progress.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: a trivia game designed by touko tahkokallio and published by onni games.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: design for jack neal's train card game. the visual links intentionally to jack's open rails series.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: design for jack neal's historic railroads / 18xx hybrid. this is based on ideas found in the winsome remakes, but takes the design some steps further. the files are available at picasa.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: this was a quick commission for a game prototype. the client wanted a clean and fun look for the game, so i did a simple, sort of comic book style design.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the "aged map" version. winsome games puts out great games with a rather spartan visual quality. i know i won't get much kicks out of the game if it looks dull, so these really needed a redesign.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: "aged map" versions of some of the bezier games expansions for (age of) steam. designed to work specifically with steam.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: a redesign of a free print and play game by jack neal. the design draws some elements from my other train designs. the main difference with the original version is that this replaces all boards with cards.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: a boardgame inspired by the classic 8-bit computer game m.u.l.e. all graphics by me; the game itself is designed in co-operation with a friend of mine. the latest rules are now available for download. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the bugbear version. again based on a series of tiny monster
doodles in my sketchbook. the cards in my version are much more readable
and the theme definitely more absurd than in the original. the same cards
could also be used for don.
note: after taking the photos, i noticed there are several wrong plays in the mock-up. see if you can spot them all! by adding risk cards, the deck can also be used for
lost cities ::
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the fantasy version. based on "the dungeons of eternal ruin",
a not-very-subtly parodic game designed years ago with a friend of mine. thus the theme here
is deliberately way overboard. again, the official version is very
beautiful, but i didn't
feel like shelling out a heap of money for what is still practically a very simple game.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the conspiracy version. i decided to have a different theme, and this lent to some interesting graphic design options. i did the design just before the whole da vinci code thing hit, and it felt quite like jumping on a bandwagon by accident. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the spam version. based on small doodles found in my sketch book, and
genuine, assorted spam. real coins have a distinct feel to them,
certainly much nicer than the plastic or cardboard ones. one could though argue that the new
¸berplay edition looks much nicer than my black and white doodles, and probably is right in
doing that.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the different materials version. a small exercise combining
photographs and hand drawn numbers. again the addition of real coins
enhances the gaming experience. and even though the whole game is just about the numbers, i
think that the extra eye candy still has an effect.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: i wanted to try a new technique, combining watercolour and ink drawings on the computer. the design recycles some ideas of previous official designs, but is completely self designed.
:: the market board for the two player adaptation, medici vs. strozzi. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: an interpretation of the original web of power map, as well as the vatican expansion, here aptly named "the forbidden city". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: this came into existence as a sort of a side product of the previous ones. could be seen as a rip-off of the original. i guess it is, somehow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: this is the first installment of the games series set in a fantasy land called, at the moment, erewhon. the game depicts a power struggle, where two factions compete for domination by influencing various groups (nobles, peasants, soldiers, wizards). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the second installment in the erewhon series. here two powerful wizards fight a duel by using various spells. designwise, i aimed for strong iconic imagery. (the board is under construction.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: aiming for a slightly darker tone than the original, but maintaining the stylised, comic-like overall feel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: the meeple united vs. fc carcassonne version. the board halves are separate, so this packs in quite small, eg. in the carcassonne box. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: a generic 50 point scoring track, to be used with eg. die fugger, verr‰ter, meuterer, coloretto, lost cities.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- - -
:: not really a homebrew version, more of a tweak: replacing the awkward cardboard chits with real coins certainly adds to the atmosphere. |
