REVIEWS: Desibeli.net (In Finnish only) Pääkaupunkiseudulta kotoisin oleva Iconofear julkaisi noin vuosi sitten edellisen omakustanteensa, jolla tämä kuusihenkinen orkesteri tarjosi kuulijoilleen neljän raidan mittaisen annoksen englanninkielistä tummempaa melodista metallia. Vuosi on kulunut ja Iconofear on täällä taas, uuden neljän biisin annoksen kera. Uutukaista hallitsevat ne samat elementit jotka määrittelivät edellistäkin tuotosta, eli paketista löytyy päällimäisenä melodinen, vahva ja luonteikas”perinteinen” mieslaulu. Runsaita kitaroita ja koskettimia osataan käyttää taiten ja ne kutovatkin jatkuvasti tiheitä verkkojaan, joihin kuulija tahtoo tarttua väistämättä. Kaiken takana leijuu usein vielä eteerinen naistaustalaulu, joka tukee oudolla tavalla seesteistä mutta samanaikaisesti uhkaavaa maisemaa. Sanalla sanoen Iconofear osaa luoda hypnoottisen tunnelman. Kultamitalikoroke jää kuitenkin valloittamatta, sillä laadukkaista biiseistä huolimatta kokonaisuus on viimekertaista epätasaisempi. Hyvä tämä on silti näinkin, jokohan Iconofearin olisi seuraavaksi aika kokeilla hieman pitempää kiekon mallia? Mika Roth, 02.03.2006 Imperiumi (In Finnish only) Iconofear vakuutti demosedät ja –tädit ympäri Suomea ja vähän ulkomaitakin jo edellisellä demollaan The 13th Circle. Bändin vaalimassa konseptissa ei vuosi sitten juuri nokankoputtamista ollut ja vielä vähemmän moiseen on aihetta, kun kuuntelee bändin nykytuotantoa. Ruuvia on totta vie kiristetty entisestään. Iconofearin ihailtavin piirre on sen omaleimainen tyyli ja soundi. Joitakin yhtäläisyyksiä on löydettävissä esimerkiksi Kiuas –yhtyeeseen, johon bändillä onkin yhteyksiä ex-jäsenistönsä kautta. Yhteistä näillä orkestereilla on useiden tyylilajien sumeilematon ja onnistunut yhdistely, mutta siihenpä suoranaiset yhteydet päättyvätkin. Iconofear luottaa tummempaan, hieman elokuvamaiseen raskaan kitaroinnin ja tunnelmoinnin kombinaatioon. Mahtipontista paisuttelua ja maalailua ei The Unbreathingilta puutu. Tyylitajusta ei kuitenkaan päästetä irti hetkeksikään, joten ylilyöntejä ei pääse tapahtumaan. The 13th Circlellä Iconofear-debytointinsa suorittanut vokalisti Thomas Vee tuntuu löytäneen nyt paikkansa bändissä ja kosketinsoittaja-Heidi luikauttelee oopperamaisia taustavokaalejaan juuri oikeissa paikoissa. Kaiken kaikkiaan sovitukset vaikuttavat tarkkaan harkituilta. Bändinä Iconofear on täysin valmis paketti. Oma ilme on vahvasti läsnä läpi koko nelikappaleisen demon ja soitosta huokuu varmuus. Kaksi ensimmäistä biisiä, Human Will ja The Unbreathing hipovat timanttisuudessaan täydellisyyttä, mutta kaksi seuraavaa eivät aivan edellämainittujen tasolle yllä – tästä siis puolen pisteen vaje nappisuorituksesta. Olen kuitenkin vakuuttunut, että Iconofearilla olisi rahkeita säveltää kokopitkän verran maistuvia, kuuntelua kestäviä makupaloja. Helpoimmasta päästä ei tämä bändi ole, eli täytyy vain toivoa, että joltakin levy-yhtiöltä löytyisi hippunen riskinottokykyä. 4½ / 5 Eve Kojo, 08.03.2006 Tartarean Desire The finnish band Iconofear has its roots in a former death metal band called Agonia. According to the infos I got along with the cd, they left the death metal genre because the “growlings didn´t inspire them anymore”. Obviously the traditional hardrock/metal style has inspired Iconofear much more, especially the guys of Iron Maiden seem to have left their impact on this finnish band, you can hear affinities for example in the vocals of the male singer Thomas Vee, who did a good job though. Nevertheless, Iconofear are no copycats. The songs on The unbreathing are dark, mixing traditional metal with modern song structures and touches of power metal. A well integrated keyboard adds a certain level of dark and sometimes creepy emotions. Heidi Parviainen is not only the keyboard player, but also responsible for the female vocals: There is no doubt that she is talented and her voice fits to the music of Iconofear. Her vocal parts are not equally prominent on the songs, but always well balanced, creating an additional emotional depth to the songs. I only wished that Heidi´s vocals would have been expressed a little more powerful. Iconofear creates basically an interesting, fresh mixture between the sharp-edged, hunting guitars of traditional heavymetal and modern creepy metal with a few glimpses of gothic and power metal. The music delivers emotions in a more sophisticated way than a lot of other traditional metal bands do. Hearing The unbreathing countless times, I got the impression that Iconofear has had a lot of fun when recording and playing the stuff, must be fun to see them live, I guess. After releasing three EP´s with four songs on each, it is time for a full length release... I would have choosen the standout track The unbreathing as the opener track, this song really kicks ass. We sleep in silence is another standout track, that really me got me from the beginning to the end. 8 / 10 Blake, 13.3.2006 Tuhma (In Finnish only) Espoolainen Iconofear osoitti jo edelisellä The 13th Circle -demollaan olevansa varsin valmis pakkaus. Bändin tummassa ja monitahoisessa metallissa ei juuri anneta armoa, vaan kitaramelodiat ja kauhuleffamainen tunnelma lyövät lyttyyn monet levy-yhtiöiden suojatitkin. Soittajat ovat taitavia, ja vokalisti Thomas Vee on saanut lisää voimaa puhtaaseen lauluunsa.Äänitteen paras kappale Human Will rakentuu vahvojen riffien ja nopean poljennon varaan. Hyvää taustatukea antaa Heidi Parviainen pahaentisillä syntikkamelodioillaan ja oopperahenkisellä taustalaulullaan. Thomas Veen tulkinta kertosäkeessä on myös varsin taidokas. The Unbreathing hyödyntää samaa kaavaa kuin edeltäjänsä, joskin on hieman rauhallisempi ja tunnelmallisempi murskaavista kitaroistaan huolimatta. Blinded Ways on taas vähän nopeampi ja rankempi pala, josta mielen sopukoihin jäljen jättävät jälleen synkät syntikat ja raastava kitarointi. Myös We Sleep In Silence nojaa lyijynraskaisiin riffeihin, mutta kokonaisuutena se ei yllä aivan samalle tasolle muiden kanssa.Iconofearin konsepti erottuu edukseen monista samojen polkujen tallaajista etenkin kantavan laulun ja tyylikkäiden kosketinosuuksien vuoksi. Biisit toimivat sekä rakenteellisesti että sisällöllisesti, eikä homma rönsyile liikaa mihinkään suuntaan. Vaikkei kiekko aivan ämpärin lailla ensi kuulemalta ohimoon kolahdakaan, muutaman kerran jälkeen homman toimivuudesta ei ole epäselvyyttä. 4½ / 5 Olli Koikkalainen, 31.3.2006 Stalkermusic (In Finnish only) Agonia nimisen yhtyeen jäänteistä kyhätty Iconofear on perustettu viime vuosituhannen lopussa, kun örinämetalli ei enää napannut jäbbiä. Muutaman EP:n, jäsenten vaihdoksen ja pitkän keikka rupeaman jälkeen bändi on päässyt siihen vaihesseen, että levy-yhtiöitä pitäisi kosiskella promo-seedeen innoittamana. Mikäs siinä kosiskellessa, kun on neljä darkhevimetalli-biisiä ( joku levyarvostelija oli keksinyt nasevan termin) on purkissa. Tuo darkhevimetalli voisi kansan kielellä olla vaikka melodista ja tummaa metallia cliinillä mies- ja naislaululla höystettynä. Tosin naislaulua ei ihan koko ajan kuulla. Ihan pikkuisen mennään Nightwishin jalanjäljissä. Siis todella vähän…Promoseedee sisältää erittäin napakoita kitarariffejä. Tällä kertaa napakoilla tarkoitan teräviä ja iskeviä. Ei semmoisia hirveitä junttapolkemisriffejä, mutta kyllä junttaakin kuullaan sopivissa määrin. Muutamia soolojakin, nuo kuusikieliset musiikkitaivaan keisarit, päästävät ilmoille. Mies-naislaulu yhdistelmä toimii moitteettoman hyvin. Thomas Veellä on miehekkään karkea ääni, jopa vähän persoonallisen pistävä ja siihen kun yhdistää Heidi Parviaisen heleän kauniin naisäänen, niin jo alkaa lyyli kirjoittamaan… Mies rumpupatterin takana hoitaa tonttinsa mallikkaasti, hyvinkin suoralla linjalla ilman suurempia kikkailuja. Erittäin toimivaa. Loppupeleissä musiikki on suhteellisen mainstreamia. Ei itselläni ainakaan tule mitään Wouh!-elämystä, jota vähän jäin kyllä kaipaamaan. Mutta mukavasti toimii siltikin. Auch auf ihrem dritten Demo quetschen sie Keyboard-Soundteppiche und weibliche Background-Vocals in ein von traditionellem Metal der Marke IRON MAIDEN inspiriertes Grundgerüst. Aber im Vergleich zum Vorgänger "The 13th Circle" klingt die Chose schon etwas stimmiger. Produktionstechnisch ist "The Unbreathing" jedenfalls um Längen besser, und Thomas Vee, der nach dem Weggang von Ilja Jalkanen (KIUAS) seit "The 13th Circle" bei den Finnen für den Gesang zuständig ist, hat sein Terrain inzwischen abgesteckt und riskiert keine Bauchlandungen mehr, indem er sich in Bereiche vorwagt, die ihm schlichtweg nicht liegen. In den vier dezent progressiv gehaltenen und spielerisch recht versiert umgesetzten, leicht düsteren Tracks wechselt er gekonnt zwischen raueren Shouts, hohen Screams und teilweise richtig tollen hymnisch-melodischen Refrains. Trotzdem, mit Keyboarderin Heidi Parviainens dominanten Musik- und mittelmäßigen Gesangs-Beiträgen kann ich mich einfach nicht anfreunden, und so richtig spannend finde ich somit auch den dritten Silberling dieser Dark-Heavy-Metal-Formation nicht. Unter http://www.mikseri.net/iconofear kann man den abwechslungsreichen Titeltrack herunterladen und sich somit selbst ein Bild verschaffen, ob man die fünf Euro für "The Unbreathing" (zu beziehen über die Band unter com) ausgeben möchte. Elke Huber, 29.03.2006 21st Century Metal Net Finnish Dark Heavy Metal band ICONOFEAR are back with another demo CD worthy of their name. The band's first singer Ilja Jalkainen and the drummer Markku N?reneva have already left the band due to their main commitment to KIUAS, and the band has been joined by new vocalist Thomas Vee and drummer Rami Kokko from the second CD. I have missed this previous demo, but I think 'The Unbreathing' still follows in the same footsteps of the first CD musically, combining dark, heavy guitars and haunting atmospheric keyboard arrangement complimented by gothical female choruses. They have, however, managed to widen and redefine their vision with the new line-up and it works quite well on this CD: Thomas' expressive vocals perfectly add an emotional layer to their unique sound, which I can only sum up as dark, slightly progressive heavy metal tinged with melancholic goth feel. ICONOFEAR is one of few Finnish newcomers whose sound is instantly recognisable. They sound more compact and focused, but the songs take a bit longer to get into, meaning it keeps developing everytime you hear them. Icon o' Fear? Icon of Ear? Despite a confusing name (heh), the Finnish sextet responsible for the EP "The Unbreathing" is almost a pretty good melodic death metal band. There's just one problem.
They're not a melodic death metal band. They're a power metal band.
Iconofear are epic and melodic. They are also harsh and aggressive. While lacking in any percussive blasts or technical rhythms, the four-track EP "The Unbreathing" offers up enough complex guitar crunch and vague darkness to draw comparisons to bands like Arch Enemy or Soilwork, while at the same time laying claim to equal amounts of melody and keyboards in the vein of Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica (and coming across somewhat closer to the second pair than the first). Not since Kiuas have I heard a band meld power metal and death metal with such skill. And given Iconofear's links with the aforementioned warriors of the land of frost and snow, such a parallel shouldn't be too surprising.
The band's third EP begins with "Human Will," a song that opens up as a keyboard-heavy death metal song, only to morph into an aggressive power metal song: crunchy guitar riffs, thick walls of synthetic strings, and the smooth-yet-edged crooning of Thomas Vee (complimented by backup vocalist Heidi Parviainen, who is also Iconofear's keyboardist). Parviainen makes her first singing appearance on the second track, "The Unbreathing," a more ethereal, mid-tempo tune that once again blends thick aggressive metal with beautiful melodies and power metal vocals. Vee also displays a bit of harshness on this EP's title track, a trait not especially prevalent amongst the majority of European power metal. This aggression continues in "Blinded Wars," which also boasts some viciously shredding guitars and the most melodic death metal anywhere on this EP. It's almost brutal. And the EP's final track, while not going too far to diversify Iconofear's sound, solidifies the band's penchant for driving guitar rhythms, soaring choruses, emotionally harsh vocals, and dense keyboards.
Iconofear are obviously a young, unsigned band. Despite the fact that this group has been around in one form or another since 1999, Iconofear have yet to record a full-length album or convince a record label to support them. Of this latter aspect I am especially surprised, as there is easily a huge amount of potential in this band. But without some more money to devote to studio time or more than four songs to showcase the band's sound, Iconofear are leaving at least one music reviewer thirsting for more. For good and bad. Thankfully, Iconofear tend more towards the former than the latter.
...besides, any metal band that thanks Kiuas first and foremost in their liner notes is obviously doing something right. Then again, given the fact that three previous members of Iconofear now devote themselves full-time to Kiuas (as vocalist, bassist and drummer), and the band's first EP utilized Kiuas' current keyboardist for mixing and mastering, I suppose this shouldn't be too surprising.
In fact, I only learned about these ties between Kiuas (one of my favorite bands of all time, and single-handedly responsible for my top metal album of 2005) and Iconofear a few minutes ago. So you can be guaranteed that I will be paying attention to this band in the future. The more I listen to Iconofear's "The Unbreathing," the more I realize that this is a band capable of blending passion with aggression in ways only one or two bands before them have been capable of - not to mention the group's use of female vocals. It's not a perfect release... indeed, "The Unbreathing" leaves me closer to hungry than satisfied. But it is a good type of hunger. And despite possessing one of the more annoying appellations of any Nordic metal bands I can think of, Iconofear imply the promise of greatness from beginning to end.
9 / 10 F. Justin Ossmann, 28.4.2006 Metal Storm "The Unbreathing” is the 3rd demo of Iconofear a band that comes from Finland and that some of you, loyal readers of Metal Storm, already know. Iconofear plays Power Metal with the typical musical touches and sonorities that we find in a lot of productions from this country but their Power Metal isn’t so happy. Don’t expect some Flower Power here, “The Unbreathing” is dark, really dark… This is the principal difference between Iconofear and the majority of the others bands that play Power nowadays, they don’t play something that sound like “we killed a dragon, we’re happy now, and we’re all friends”… It’s Power, with fast riffs and catchy melodies but the music is Dark and the Keyboards lines help a lot on this point. Though, sometime the keyboards can even give a Progressive sound. It’s not super original on a side but there is something new too in the music of Iconofear. Of course “The Unbreathing” isn’t perfect and I regret a bit that it is too much influenced by the Finish Metal scene. Don’t read that Metal from this country is bad, of course not, but I still can’t understand why a lot of Metal bands from there all have this really similar sound, their originality pay the price… It’s a bit sad because today bands must be original (I know it’s like impossible but still) and if the compositions of Iconofear could have some points a bit different I really believe that the band could become really big. If they can just try to do a little break with Finish Metal influences it will probably pay for them. All is not perfect on this demo, but for sure Iconofear is better than a lot of bands that release albums nowadays. After three demos it’s time now, in my opinion, to release an album and since that they have a good potentiallity, I believe that a label will find soon a real interest in this band. Time will tell, but you’re all welcome, if you like Power Metal of course, to try this band and support them if you like it. 7.5 / 10 Jeff, 11.04.2006 Soundi (In Finnish only) Iconofearin rivit ovat uudistuneet, kun Kiukaan soittajat ovat alkaneet keskittyä omaan pääyhtyeeseensä. Muutokset rivistössä ovat tuoneet muutoksia myös musiikkiin. Perusasiat ovat edelleen kohdallaan, mutta tapahtuneita tarkistuksia ja täsmennyksiä voi tervehtiä ilolla. Iconofearin progevivahteiset teokset ovat aiempaa jylhempiä, mahtipontisempia ja massiivisempia. Tietenkään demon tuotanto ei aivan tee oikeutta biiseille, mutta yhtyeen potentiaali on selvästi kuultavissa. Uusilla biiseillä etenkin naislaulu tuntuu kohoavan uusiin ulottuvuuksiin, ja pitkät melodiset kaaret kielisoittimien jyrinän yläpuolella rakentavat tunnelmallisesti huikean yhdistelmän. Iconofear vie uusilla biiseillään metallia hienovaraisin askelin suuntaan, jossa monen muun tyylitaju loppuu helposti kesken. Iconofearin ideat kantavat ja bändi työstää materiaaliaan selväästi pieteetillä. Siksi siitä on helppo nauttia. Marko Säynekoski 5/2006 Noise (In Finnish only) Vuonna 1999 perustettu Iconofear on onnistunut pitämään homman kasassa useista miehistönvaihdoksista huolimatta. Näistä kenties "traagisin" lienee parin vuoden takaa, kun parivaljakko Näränevä-Jalkanen lähti täyspäiväisesti Kiukaan leipiin. Iconofear on osoitus siitä, kuinka paljon Suomessa riittää täysin valmiita demobändejä maailmaa valtaamaan. Soitto on kohdallaan, kuten myös sävellyspuoli. The Unbreathingistä on vaikea löytää moitittavaa. Hivenen Iced Earthin Burnt Offeringsin mieleen tuova melodinen kauhumetalli soljuu sujuvasti eteenpäin. Demon biisit ovat yhtä kokonaisuutta, mutta silti kappaleissa on riittävästi monipuolisuutta. Löytyypä avausraita Human Willistä oikein tarttuvanpuoleinen kertosäekin. Olen Noise-stinttini aikana ehtinyt todistamaan yhden jos toisen arvostelemani yhtyeen nousua autotallista levyttäväksi artistiksi. Eiköhän Iconofearin vuoro ole seuraavaksi. |
